GOLCONDA FORT

Golconda Fort is 11 km from Hyderabad city. This ruin fort was originally belonged to the Kakatiya rulers of Warangal, Brahmanis changed its mud construction into masonry. The most remarkable feature of the Fort is its system of acoustics, where by a chapping of hands at the entry gate can be heard at the top of the Fort, some 61 meters high. The water was raised by an ingenious system through laminated clay pipes and Persian wheels to cool the roof gardens and high walls of palaces. Once Golconda was famous diamond market & the capital of Qutab Shahi Kings from 1518 to 1687.

HOSLEY HILLS

Mr. W. D. Horsley, a British member of the Indian Civil service, and a collector of Cuddapah, constructed two houses known as Kacheri room and Milk Bungalow on top of these hills, hence it is known as Horslay Hills. Originally Horsley Hills was known as Yenugu Mallamma Konda according to a legend, there lived on the crest of the hilll a saintly woman named Mallamma who was protected and fed by an elephant namely Yenugu. Konda is the word for Hill. Hence the name Yenugu (elephant) Mallamma(woman) Konda (Hill).

These picturesque Horsley Hills, are 1265 Meters above sea level, situated in Madanapalle taluka, Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh. The wooded slopes of this hill station are studded with groves of Teak, Red Sandalwood, Eucalyptika, Gulmohur and Mango which presents a pleasing spectacle.

The climate here is cool, delightful and bracing. The average temperature of this place is around 90 F maximum and 70 F. minimum. These hills are famous for its scanic beauty and the salubrious climate throughout the year.

Accommodation : Tourist Rest House of tourist department, Forest Bungalow and other Rest Houses are situated at Horsley hills.

Air : Nearest Airport are Tirupati (160 kms), Bangalore (165 kms) & Channai (240 kms)

Rail : Nearest Railway Station is Madanapalle road. (30 kms)

Bus : Regular buses to Madanapalle, Tirupatti, Bangalore etc.

 

HYDERABAD

Fifth largest city of India, Hyderabad is the capital of Andhra Pradesh State. It was founded by Mohammad Quli (Qutab Shahi King popularly known as Nizam) in 1590. It consists of the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad.

Places of Interest :

  1. Charminar : Situated in the heart of the old walled city, surrounded by bazaars. Charminar was built by Mohammad Quli Qutub Shah in 1591, to commemorate the end of plague in Hyderabad. The four slender minarets, each 53 meters high enclose a tiny mosque on the second floor.

    Charminar is illuminated daily from 19.00 to 21.00 hrs.

    Fee : There is a nominal fee for going up on the minaret.

  2. Macca Masjid : One of the largest mosque in India, it can accommodate upto 10,000 worshippers. Situated next to Charminar, its construction began during the reign of Mahammad Quli Qutab Shah and completed in 1687 A.D. by the Mughal emperor Aurangazeb.
  3. Birla Mandir : Built of white marble, on the rock which over looks the southern end of Hussin Sagar lake. Non Hindu are allowed inside the temple.

     

  4. Nehru Zoological Park : Zoo : One of the largest zoo of India, it spread over 300 acres of landscaped gardens with the animals contained in large open enclosures. Pre-historic Animal Park, Ancient Life Museum, Natural History Museum, Lion Safari Park, Children's Train are some of the attraction of this park.

    Open from 9.00 to 18.00 hrs, Monday closed.

  5. Salar Jang Museum : This museum has 77 rooms, 35000 rare exhibit drawn from all over the world including Sculptures, Wood carving, Religious objects, Paintings, Weapons etc. A collection by one man, Mir Yusuf Ali Khan (Salar Jang III), the Prime Minister of the Nizam.

Open from : 10.00 to 17.00 hrs, Friday closed.

Excursion :

  2. The tomes of the Qutab Shahi Kings : About a km north of the outer perimeter wall of Golconda. They are fairly small but graceful structures surrounded by landscaped gardens. A number of them display beautifully carved stone work.

Bus : Regular buses to Golconda Fort, Nagarjunasagar, Nagarjunakods, Osmansagar, Warangal, Amaravati,

Bhadrachalam, Bangalore, Tirupati, Horsely Hills, Bangalore, Channai etc.

Rail : It is a Railway Junction of several rail lines.

SECUNDARABAD

SRI KALAHASTI

This pilgrim center of Sri Kalahasti stands between two steep hills on the bank of the river Swarnamukhi, and has a temple dedicated to the God of the winds.

Air : Nearest Airport is at Tirupati.(40 kms)

Bus : Regular buses to Tirupati, Vijayawada, Chittoor, etc.

Rail : Tirupati and Renigunta are the nearest Railway Stations.

TIRUPATI

Venkateswara Swamy Temple is situated on the top of the Holly Hill of Tirumala, about 19 kms from the Tirupati Railway Station. Only Hindus are allowed in the inner temple. There are many Dharmashalas on the hill.

Air : Airport is at 16 km from Indian Airlines Office at Tirupati

Bus : Frequent buses from Tirupati to Tirumala Hill. Regular buses from Tirupati to Sri Kalahasti, Chennai,

Bangalore, Hyderabad, Vijayawada, etc.

 

VISAKHAPATANAM & WALTAIR

The uplands of Visakhapatnam on the sea side is Waltair.

WARANGAL

Once the capital of the great Kakatiya Kingdom, Warangal is 9 kms from Kazipet and 140 kms from Hyderabad. The Kakatiya rulers were great temple builders. The thousend pillared temple, the fort of Warangal and Ramappa temple of Palanpet were constructed by the Kakitiya Kings.

Places of Interest :

  1. The Thousand Pillar Temple : This temple is situated on the slopes of the hills of Hanumankonds, was built in the Chalukyan style with each pillar richly carved out. It has doors of exceptional beauty with perforated and ornamental stone screens. The ceiling and doorways contain fine figures of numerous gods and goddesses.
  2. Bhadrakali Temple : Is situated on the top of a hillock between Warangal and Hanumankonda.
