AMARNATH

Altitude 3962 meter 46.7 km from Pahalgam. The cave of Sri Amar Nath is believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva. The Lingam, formed by water dripping through the limestone roof of the cave. Each year in the month of Sawn (July-August) several thousand pilgrims start to the cave, from Pahalgam to make obeisance on the full moon day.

Route : Pahalgam to Chandanwari 16 km. Altitude 2895 meter. Pony trek as well as a jeepable road with very steep gradients. There are modestly furnished Rest House and pilgrims shelters at Chandanwari.

Chandanwari to Sheshang 11.3 km. Altitude 3574 meter. Pony trek. There is a freshwater lake, Rest house and pilgrim shelter at Wawjan.

DACHIGAM W L S

(21 km) This sanctuary provides shelter to the Himalayan black bear, brown bear, musk deer, and hangul or Kashmir stag. Tourists are required to obtain special permits from the Chief Wild Life Warden.

GULMERG

(52 km from Sri Nagar) Altitude : 2730 meter.

"The meadow of flowers", Gulmerg is a charming Hill Station. It offers a magnificent view of Nanga Parbat, one of the highest mountains in the world and is an excellent winter sports center. It also has the highest green golf course in the world.

Gulmerg is fringe by gigantic fire and pines, paradise for lovers of golf. A variety of snows-covered sloped of Aphawat and Khilanmarg provides playgrounds for every type of winter sports such as skiing, tobogganing, skating etc. (season December to March). Gulmerg is the most excellent base for the most delightful treks.

Excursion :

  1. Outer Circular Walk (11 km)

  2. Khilanmarg (5 km). It is a 40 minutes uphill journey from Gulmarg. There is a fine view of the peaks and the wide spreading waters of Wular and other lakes.

  3. Alpather Lake (13 km). The icy waters of the lake, which remain frozen till the middle of June, carry floating snow.

  4. Ningal Nallah : (10 km). This stream flows from the snow-bed and springs near Aphawat and Alpather and cuts through picturesque pine forests.

  5. Ziarat of Badareshi : (5 km). A Muslim shrine, situated at east of the Gulmerg valley. The path leads down through thick forest.

JAMMU

Jammu is the winter capital of the State of Jammu and Kashmir and is the gateway to the Kashmir valley. Jammu is also the railhead for Srinagar Buses to Srinagar leave Jammu early in the morning and take 10 to 12 hours to reach Srinagar.

KOHOLI GLACIER

Route : Pahalgam to Aru, 11 km pony trek. Altitude 2403 meter. The path winds through woods to the charming meadow of Aru, camp or stray at the Rest House. Aru to Lidderwatt 11 km pony trek. Altitude 3048 meter. A meadow in dense forests and a picturesque camping ground. Trek from here to the Sindh Valley Camp or stray in the Rest House. Kolohai Glacier 13 km pony trek from Lidderwatt up to the base of the glacier 3200 meter.

LADAKH

Beyond the Kashmir valley lies Ladakh, the land of insurmountable mountains and fascinating monasteries. Ladakh, the abode of rare kind and highland Yak, Leh, is the capital of Ladakh.

Road Route : Srinagar to Leh (Ladakh) 434 km.

Leh is connected by Air with Chandigarh and Delhi (Monday and Thursday) & with Srinagar (Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday).

RANGANATHITTU BIRD SANCTURY

(16 km) (3 km from Srirangapatnam) It is situated on the Islands of the river Cauvery, covering an area of 675 hectors. Migrant birds like Egrets, Darters, Spoonbills, White Ibis, Open Bill, Strokes, Night Hersons, Pond Hersons, etc. are seen here. The best season for bird watching is between June and September.

SOMNATHPUR

(45 km) Sri Channakeshwara temple built around 1260 A. D. during Hoysala rule. The walls of star shaped temple are literally covered with superb sculptures in stone depicting various scented from Ramayana, Mahabharata, Bhagavata and life & time of the Haysale Kings. Open from : 9.00 to 17.00 hrs.

Bus from Mysore to Tirarasipura and then another bus to Somnathpur.

SRAVANABELAGOLA

The statue of Lord Bahubali (Gomateshwara) was created during the reign of the Ganga king Rachamalla and executed by the sculpture Aristanemi in 981 A. D. It is 17 meters high and carved out of a single piece of rock, is said to be the world's tallest monolithic statue. It stands on top of the rocky hill known as Indragiri (614 steps) and is visible even at a distance of 25 km.

Legend : Bahubali was the youngest son of the Jain Emperor. Aadi (first) Tirthankara Sri Rishabha Deva, who ruled over a kingdom in northern India and later became the first Jain Tirthankar. When Rishabha Deva renounced his kingdom and retired to the forest to perform penance, a bitter struggle for succession broke out among this two sons, Bahubali and Bharatha. The battle culminated in a duel between the two brother in which Bahubali emerged the victor, but in this moment of triumph, he realized the futility of worldly success, gave his kingdom and all his worldly possessions to Bharatha and retired to the forest, to begin a 1000-year penance.

The Statue of Lord Bahubali is subject of spectacular Mahamastaka-bhi sheke ceremony, which takes place once every 12 years. It involves the anointing of Lord Bahubali's head with thousands of pitfalls of coconut milk, yogohurt, ghee, bananas, jagery, almonds, poppy seeds, milk, gold coins, saffron and sandalwood from the top of a scaffolding erected for the purpose.

WHILE FILED
