DIMAPUR
Dimapur is the gateway of Nagaland and its only railhead. It's in important trade and commerce center on the National highway No. 39. It was the capital of the Kachari rulers.
Places of Interest:
- The relics of the Kachari Kingdom are the main attraction for the tourists. These relics are being maintained by the Archaeological Departments.
- The Ruth's and Haralu emporia : Here one can see women weaving exquisite Naga Shawls on traditional looms, and also make purchases of traditional handicrafts.
- Intangki : (38.4 km). Wildlife Sanctuary recently opened by the Government of Nagaland.
Air: Nearest Airport is 5 km from the City Indian Airlines Office.
Bus: Regular buses to Gauhati, Jorhat, Imphal, and Kohima.
KOHIMA
Standing at about 1,500 meters, Kohima is the capital of Nagaland. It attracted world attention during the 2nd world war. It was here that the Indian forces halted the invasion of India by the Japanese forces.
Places of Interest:
- War Cemetery: Japanese entered the Indian Territory as far as this place in 2nd World War. A war cemetery and a memorial to those, who died in the grim battle are built here. The commemorative tablet reads as: "when you go home tell them of us and say, for your tomorrow we gave our today." There are in all 1200 bronze epitaphs in the memory of the brave.
- Museum: In the museum halls there are life size statues draped in tribal attire and adornments- a lady 'singing' as the weaves along at the loom, the embers in the primitive stove the pageants of tribal life are impressive and realistic. Also displayed are traditional artifacts. In the basement there are birds and animals.
- The Kohima Village: Barra Basti: The Kohima village is called Barra Basti and is perhaps the most populous village in the whole of Asia. It is situated on the high summit opposite the Japavo and Kapamedzu ridges, and has a population of over ten thousand.
In any tour to Nagaland, the tourist must make it a point to visit a Naga Village. These, more then anything else will give him a living insight into the Naga way of life, its exotic culture and rich tribal traditions. Most of these villages are located on hill - tops and are well fortified with stone walls. The huts are thatched.
Excursion:
- Khonoma Village: 20 km. Another picturesque village and the site of many warfare operations between the tribal and the British explorers.
- Japavo Pask: 12 km at 3.014 meters, Japavo is the highest peak in Nagaland Close to the western boundary of the state, it forms a watershed.
- Phek:145 km. A picturesque town and the district headquarters. One can see great many varieties of flowers here.
- Mon: (65 km). The Konyak tribe inhabits Mon. The faces of the tribal are tattooed, and they wear feathered headgear and traditional earrings. The people are expert wood carvers.
- Tuensang: (110 km) From Mokokchung. Tuensang is the home of Chang. Sangtem and Yumchunger Nagas, the fabled headhunters of the community center, with lizards and mithuns carved in wood as decorations here the tribal chiefs settle community disputes.
- Mokokchung: This district is the home of music loving Ao. The western pop music reverberates in the night-air. Some of the best tropical plants are grown here.
