AGRA

Place of Interest:

  1. Taj Mahal: Constructed by the Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz

  2. Mahal, the lady of the Taj, who died in 1629, in childbirth, after producing 14 children. Construction of the Taj commenced in 1632 and was not completed until 1653. 20,000 people worked on the building of Taj.

    Every full moon night and four nights preceding and following it, the Taj remains open till midnight otherwise it is opened from Sunrise to 22.00 hrs. Entry fee Rs.2/-

  3. Agra Fort: Construction of the massive Agra Fort commenced by Akbar in 1565, addition made by Jhangir, while Shah Jahan got the white marble buildings. Open from sunrise to Sunset.

  4. Itmad ud Daulh's Tomb (Baby Taj): Situated on the other side of the river Yamuna, this impressive tomb constructed totally of marbles by the Empress Nurjahan between 1622-1628 in the memory of her father Ghias ud din Beg.

  5. Ram Beg: The earliest Mughal garden laid out by Emperor Babar in 1526.

  6. Sikandra: (Akbar's mausoleum): 10 km from Agra, built by Akbar and completed by his son Jhangir in 1613. This building was built of red sandstone, has three storied minarets at each corner.

  7. Marble Temple (Samadhi) of Radhaswami Satsang: This temple is under construction at Swamibagh, which was laid out by Swamiji Maharaj, who founded this Radhaswamiji Satsang sect of Hinduism. The temple is built of white and pink marbles; Green and yellow variegated mosaic stone is used. Trees and flowers are depicted into stone in natural form, which appeals to heart and eyes.

    Open from 8.00 to 17.00 hrs.

  8. Fatehpur Sikri: (37 km). Capital of Mughal Empire, between 1570 to 1586, during the reign of the Emperor Akbar.

Tour starts and terminates at Agra Cant. Railway station.

Another tour covers Sikandra, Dayal Bagh, Itimad- ud daula, Taj Mahal and Agra Fort. This tour also operates by U. P. S. T. D. C.

ALLAHABAD

Holly city of Hindus, Allahabad is situated on the confluence of three sacred rivers, Ganga, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati, Legend is Lord Indra dropped a few drops of divine nectar - amrit, on this spot, when he was taking away the precious pitcher from the demons. For centuries, devout have cleansed themselves of their sins in these holy waters and sought release from the cycle of rebirth. Each year in December/January, a month-long festival Magh Mela and every twelve years, Kumbh Mela, is held at the confluence - Triveni or Sangam, during which hundreds of thousands if pilgrims come from all over India for a ritual dip.

Places of Interest:

    1. Anand Bhawan: The ancestral home of the Nehru Family. It is now maintain by the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Committee. Part of the building has been converted into a museum where relics of the Nehru family are preserved for public viewing.

    2. Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium: Adjoining to Anand Bhawan, one can see a panorama of stars and planets in this planetarium.

    3. The Fort: Situated at the confluence on the Yamuna side, it was built by Akbar in 1583. This fort has massive walls and pillars and three magnificent gateways flanked by high towers.

      Inside the fort, facing the main entrance, is the famous Ashoka Pillar, a single tapering shaft or polished sand stone 10.6 meters high believed to be constructed as early as 232 BC. On the pillar are inscribed six edicts of Emperor Ashoka and eulogy to King Samudra Gupta, composed by his poet laureate, Harisena.

    4. Chandra Shekhar Azad Park and Allahabad Museum: This garden was renamed in honor of freedom fighter Chandra Shekhar Azad who died in an encounter with the British imperialists.

Within the park is the Allahabad Museum displaying many treasures of art and historical objects, which includes paintings by Nicholas Reerich and a large collection of Rajasthani miniatures and terracotta. A special section of the museum displays the numerous gifts received by India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

Open from 10.00 to 17.00 hrs. Closed on Monday and other holidays.

ALMORA

The hill resort of Almora in Kumaon region, reputed for its health-giving climate, is perched on 5-km long horse saddle shaped ridge. The natural beauty of delightful Almora is greatly enhanced by the surrounding hills, and the snow clad Himalayan peaks which surround it. One gets an excellent view of the snowy mountains beyond the hills from the open space of Lal Mandi or from the Parade Ground on the crest of the ridge.

Places of interest:

    1. Simthola: (3 km). It is an ideal picnic spot with a beautiful landscape.

    2. Kalimath: (5 km). It is famous for its landscape and view of Almora town.

    3. Mohan Joshi Park: A small park and "V" shaped artificial lake.

    4. Kasar Devi: 0.8 km beyond Kalimath on a bridle path, the temple of Kasar Devi is situated at the top of the hill.

    5. Chitai: 6 km from Almora, noted for its temple of Lord Golla. Some of the Himalayan peaks are also visible from here.

    6. Bright End Corner: An encaustic spot well know for its Sunset and Sunrise view is 2 km from Almora bus stand.

Excursion:

    1. Katarmal: (17 km). The sun temple at Katarmal is over 800 years old. Little over 1 km beyond Katarmal is Bikut forest where from a magnificent view of Almora is obtainable.

    2. Baijnath: (21 km). The 1,125 meters high spot in the idyllic Garur Valley, harbors a group of ancient temples. It has many beautiful relics of the 12th & 13th century sculptured stone statues. Katyuri era temple enshrining flawless statue of Parvati.

    3. Binsar: (Altitude 2,142 meters) (30 km). This hill resort is a celebrated spot of scenic beauty nestling in the Kumaon Hills.

    4. Gananath: (Altitude 2,116 meters) (47 km). It is situated at a height having natural landscape, caves and the Shiva Temple.

    5. Jageshwar: (34 km). Jageshwar is believed to be one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. It is situated in a beautiful narrow valley, surrounding by magnificent Deodar monarchs. There are fine specimens of sculpture in the temple of Jageshwar.

    6. Bageshwar: (90 km). A pilgrim center at the confluence of the sacred rivers of Saryu and Gomati.

    7. Pindari Glacier: trekkers' paradise, Pindari is the most easily accessible of all the glaciers in the region. Measuring nearly 3 km long and quarter km broad, Pindari is bare 58-km trek from Kapkote, the bus terminus.

BADRINATH

Badrinath, at a height of over 3,122 meters, is situated at the confluence of the Rishi Ganga and Alaknanda rivers. Guarding it on either side is the Nar and Narayan ranges and in the distance is the towering Neelkanth Peak.

Just in front of the temple of Badrinath, on the bank of the river Alaknanda, is a hot water spring - the Tapt Kund. And 4.5 km from Mana, the last village of India situated beyond Badrinath, is the tremendous waterfall is Vasudhara pouring down from a great height.

CHAKARATA

Situated at a distance of 92 km from Dehra Dun, Chakarata is a picturesque place thickly dotted with the conifers, the rhododendrons, the oaks and other high altitude trees. The existing town is situated on Chakarata and Kailana hills at an altitude of 6950 feet (2,135 meters) above sea - level having a salubrious climate. The panoramic view of the Himalayas and the surrounding area is most picturesque.

Places of Interest:

    1. Lakhamandal: Situated at a distance of 57 km from Chakarata via Churani and Barantha, Lakhamandal is the spot where a shellac house was built by the Kauravas to burn alive the Pandavas.

    2. Tiger Fall: (5 km). This fall is the most picturesque and is among the highest in UP State.

    3. Kalsi: (42 km). There is an Ashoka Edict preserved by the Archaeological Department.

    4. Dak Pathar: (49 km). Tourist spot with lush green parks, colourful flowers and river- side having a splendid backdrop of the mountains presents a picturesque sight.

CHITRAKOOT

Chitrakoot lies among the northern spurs of the Vindhyan ranges in UP, is encircled by picturesque hills know as "Kamta Nath". The township is situated along the banks of the river Mandakini. Chitrakoot represents a group of five small townships, which are Karvi, Sitapur, Kamta, Khohi and Nayagaon. The present name of this township complex is Chitrakoot Dham the most important of the five township is Sitapur, which is generally known as Chitrakoot. It is a place of religious importance because during Treta Yug, Lord Ram along with Sita and Lakshamn lived here for sometime, during exile.

Places of Interest: Kamadgiri, Ram Ghat, Pramodvan, Janki Kund, Sphatikshila, Atreya and Sati Ansuiya Ashram , Guptagodavari, Bharat Koop, Marhpha, Ganesh Bagh, Banke Siddha, Koti Tirtha, Devangana, Hanumana Dhara, Valmiki Ashram, Rajapur.

Air: Nearest Airports are at Khajuraho (172 km), Allahabad (133 km) and Kanpur (220 km).

Rail: Nearest Railway Station is Karwi (8 km).

Bus: Regular buses to Karwi, Banda (172 km) etc.

CORBETT N P

This is named after the famous naturalist Jim Corbett. It is situated partly in Garhwal and partly in Nainital District, on the banks of Ram Ganga River in the foothills of the Shivalik formation. The park has area of 525.8 sq.

The park was established in 1935 and later renamed after Jim Corbett, who spent many years in this area and wrote the book The man-eaters of Kumaon. The park is famous for its tiger but also has elephants, several types of deer, panthers and sambars. The Ram Ganga River has crocodiles and there is much bird life.

Dhikala is the main accommodation center in the park, 51 km from Ramnagar, the nearest railhead to the park. Bus service is available from Ramnagar to Dhikal seasonally. The park remains closed from about mid June to mid November.

Winter home of the world renewed naturalist Jim Corbett at Kaladhungi (79 km) presently houses a museum.

Excursion:

    1. Nainital: This hill resort in Kumaon is 118 km from Dhikala via Ramnagar & Kaladhungi.

    2. Ranikhet: This hill resort of Kumaon is 112 km from Dhikala via Dhangari.

    3. Kanda: A scenic spot 18-km from Dhikala.

    4. Kalagarh: 25 km from Dhikala via Boxar. Richly vegetated hilly spot, which is good for viewing wild life.

    1. Shikar: Totally prohibited. Visitors are advised not to carry any weapons inside the park.

    2. Guide Service: The forest Department provides a guide for going into the forest.

    3. Information Center: Wild Life Warden, Park, Ramnagar. Assistant Wild Life Warden And Assistant Park Officer at Dhikala.

    4. Photography: Allowed with suitable charges for still and movie cameras. Flashlight photography prohibited.

    5. Internal Transport: Vehicles may be chartered on advance intimation from (1 Wild Life Warden, Corbett National Park, Ramnagar, 2 Kumaon Motor Owner's Union, Ramnagar, Dist: National).

Elephants are available on hire at Dhikala to see the game in the park.

DEHRA DUN

Surrounded on the east by the Ganga, on the west by the Yamuna, the Doon Valley is a most picturesque valley at the foothills of the beautiful shivalik ranges. It has got a salubrious climate and hence is enjoyable throughout the year.

Number of education institutions of repute such as the Doon School, the Rashtriya Indian Military College, the Indian Military Academy, the Forest Research Institute are situated here.

The entire Doon Valley is full of places of scenic beauty and picnic spots. Some of these are Sahastradhara, Robbers Cave, Malsi Deer Park, Khalanga fort etc.

Places of Interest:

    1. Sahastradhara: (14 km). It is connected by city bus service and is famous for its natural beauty and cold sulfur water springs.

    2. Tapkeshwar Temple: (5 1/2 km). Connected by city bus service and Garhi 5 km, and half km is to be covered on foot. There is a motorable road up to the temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

    3. Robbers Cave: (Gucchu Pani): (8 km). Local bus service is available up to Anarwala village from where 1 km is to be covered on foot. It is ideal for picnics except during rains.

    4. Tapovan Ashram: (6 km). City bus service is available up to 4 km on Raipur route, and the distance of 2 km is to be covered on foot. Vehicles can go up to the Ashram.

    5. Rajaji Wild Life Sanctuary: It is situated at a distance of 20 km from Dehra Dun.

Excursion: Haridwar, Rishikesh, Mussoorie, Yamunotri, Gangotri, Badrinath, and Kedarnath.

DUDHWA NATIONAL PARK

The 490 sq. Km, Dudhwa National Park is of prime importance because of its flora, fauna and ecological spread out. The park encompasses the forest of North Kheri Forest Division and holds abundant Wildlife species. These include Tiger, Panther, Sambhar, Swamp Deer, Spotted Deer, Hog Deer, Barking Deer, Wild Deer, Sloth Bear, Nilgai, Mugger, Elephant, Hyena, Jackal, Ratell, Porcupine, Hare, besides 400 species of birds and various reptiles.

Note: Only conducted parties will be allowed entry in the Dudhwa National Park. Under no circumstances the tourists will be allowed to go out on their own, unless they have obtained permission in writing from the Chief Wild Life Warden, UP, Lucknow and such permission will be granted to recognized Naturalists, Scientists and Wildlife Photographers.
